Özet
This paper provides an index number approach to measuring environmental performance and then explores the existence of an environmental Kuznets type relationship between income and environmental performance as measured by this index. The environmental productivity index relies on the construction of a quantity index of good outputs and a quantity index of bad outputs by putting due emphasis on the distinctive characteristics of production with negative externalities. Intuitively the quantity index of good outputs shows the relative success of an observation, say k, in expanding its good outputs while using the same level of inputs and producing the same level of pollutants as another observation say l, in an environment where the disposal of bad outputs is not free.
