| The neoliberal transformation of higher education is a process that has been occurring across an area far wider than Turkey, especially in the last decade. The most dramatic example of this is the Bologna Process administered by the European Union (EU) but covering 49 countries 1 under European Higher Education Area (EHEA), of which Turkey is a member. This makes it impossible to analyze and criticize the neoliberal phenomenon within a framework that takes into account the prominent Islamic element in the politics and ideology of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) as the main determinant of the transformation of Turkish higher education system.
